Emerging as one of the best contraltos of her generation, Sonia Prina, made her operatic debut at La Scala in Milan at just 23 years old. She played major roles, including Rosina in “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” directed by Riccardo Chailly. Her unique voice has earned her international recognition and several awards, including the prestigious “Franco Abbiati” prize and the “Tiberini d’Oro”. Her career includes notable moments such as the title roles in works by Mozart and Gluck, as well as notable performances in operas by Rossini, Handel and other such composers. Her passion for Handel is quite evident in her interpretations of roles such as Giulio Cesare and Orlando, demonstrating a special affinity towards this composer. She also shone in works by Rossini and Mozart, performing them with renowned orchestras under the direction of eminent conductors such as Antonio Pappano and Emmanuelle Haïm.
Sonia Prina marked the Baroque period with notable performances of works such as Vivaldi’s Farnace and Teuzzone with Jordi Savall, and Vivaldi’s Juditha Triumphans with Jean-Christophe Spinosi. In addition to Baroque, she distinguished herself in the romantic and post-romantic repertoire, performing in roles such as Mistress Quickly in Falstaff and Smeton in Anna Bolena. Her extensive recording includes works by Handel, Vivaldi and Gluck, as well as performances on DVD. In 2023/2024, she will play roles such as Matilda in Handel’s Ottone and the title role in Vivaldi’s Juditha triumphans, demonstrating continuity in her commitment to Baroque music.
His musical training is extensive and diverse. He studied piano with Emilio Bonino, composition with Paolo Arcà and Gianni Possio, orchestral conducting with Donato Renzetti and Gustav Kuhn, jazz music with Franco D’Andrea, and vocal chamber music as a pianist and harpsichordist with Daniela Uccello and Maria Cecilia Farina.
He developed his artistic career at Teatro alla Scala, working alongside some of the world’s greatest Conductors, including Riccardo Chailly, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Myung Wung Chung, Daniele Gatti, Daniel Oren, Gustavo Dudamel, and Georges Pretre. His versatility allows him to excel in both the operatic and symphonic repertoires.
His international conducting career has led him to perform in prestigious theaters, festivals, and with renowned orchestras such as Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Fondazione Arena di Verona, Dresdner Philharmonie, Orchestra of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, Cameristi della Scala, Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Tiroler Festspiele Erl in Austria, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, Alden Biesen Zomeropera in Belgium, Orchestra of the Accademia della Scala, Orchestra Milano Classica, Opera Giocosa in Savona, Beer-Sheva Sinfonietta, and the Strumentisti della Scala. His performances have been broadcast live on national television in Austria (ORF) and Croatia (HRT).
A passionate scholar of Baroque music, he is also an active harpsichordist and harpsichord conductor. He has collaborated with renowned specialists such as Ottavio Dantone, Diego Fasolis, Andrea Marcon, Rinaldo Alessandrini, and Giovanni Antonini. He has been a member of Teatro alla Scala’s Baroque ensemble since its inception, performing a wide vocal and instrumental repertoire ranging from the 1600s to Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.
As a pianist, he has performed with great singers and instrumentalists such as Mariella Devia, Luciana D’Intino, Nino Machaidze, Massimo Cavalletti, and Sonia Prina. His performances have taken him to Italy, England, France, Austria, Spain, Germany, Russia, Israel, Greece, Turkey, Norway, Hong Kong, and Switzerland, in prestigious venues such as Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Wigmore Hall in London, Mupa in Budapest, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, and Istanbul Music Festival.
He is also a respected teacher. Since 2005, he has been a faculty member of the Specialization Course for Opera Singers and the Specialization Course for Musical assistant at the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala. He is regularly invited to give masterclasses on Italian opera and to serve as a juror for important international competitions.
