“Naturally, Sonia's sensitivity, gentleness, softness and depth of expression are simply miraculous, and her pronunciation of Latin has a very special flavor.” (forumopera.com)

Emerging as one of the best contraltos of her generation, Sonia Prina, made her operatic debut at La Scala in Milan at just 23 years old. She played major roles, including Rosina in “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” directed by Riccardo Chailly. Her unique voice has earned her international recognition and several awards, including the prestigious “Franco Abbiati” prize and the “Tiberini d’Oro”. Her career includes notable moments such as the title roles in works by Mozart and Gluck, as well as notable performances in operas by Rossini, Handel and other such composers. Her passion for Handel is quite evident in her interpretations of roles such as Giulio Cesare and Orlando, demonstrating a special affinity towards this composer. She also shone in works by Rossini and Mozart, performing them with renowned orchestras under the direction of eminent conductors such as Antonio Pappano and Emmanuelle Haïm.

Sonia Prina marked the Baroque period with notable performances of works such as Vivaldi’s Farnace and Teuzzone with Jordi Savall, and Vivaldi’s Juditha Triumphans with Jean-Christophe Spinosi. In addition to Baroque, she distinguished herself in the romantic and post-romantic repertoire, performing in roles such as Mistress Quickly in Falstaff and Smeton in Anna Bolena. Her extensive recording includes works by Handel, Vivaldi and Gluck, as well as performances on DVD. In 2023/2024, she will play roles such as Matilda in Handel’s Ottone and the title role in Vivaldi’s Juditha triumphans, demonstrating continuity in her commitment to Baroque music.
